Yevgeniya Vernadskaya by ramida-r Yevgeniya Vernadskaya by ramida-r
My OC Yevgeniya, Nicolai's mother. This was part of an exercise getting me back into painting after such a long absence.

Thank you ideal-insomnia for pointing out the name correction for me. Much appreciated!

Ah, your character designs are always so beautiful and detailed! So much personality in them

One little thing, though. If she's truly Russian, her family name should have a feminine form: Vernadskaya. Her name is also mostly spelled as YevgEniya :)

Thank you for the correction! I learned something new today (didn't realize that -ski was male and -skaya was female). I have made the necessary corrections. Thanks again for your input and checking out my art. Much appreciated :)

Oh, it's nothing. Female forms of family names are constantly being ignored in Western movies and such. Russian language must be such a pain :D But, being Russian myself, I really appreciate your work and all the attention you're paying to Russian culture.

Thank you, I always want to try to get the facts right when doing work outside my own culture. Corrections and learning new things is always welcome. I do have a question though. In Russia nowadays, if a daughter is born to a family, is her surname always registered with the feminine ending? For example, the Ivanov family have a baby daughter, does she get her surname registered as Ivanov or Ivanova on the birth certificate? I've always been very curious about this part of the naming convention.

I wish everyone was as mindful of details as you :)
As for your question - yes, and it has always been like this. If a family name has a feminine ending at all it should always be applied when needed. Family names are treated almost like adjectives, and like adjectives in Russian, they should have a proper gender form.
However, I believe there is no general rule for family names and their gender forms. Female form is the same plus an "a" at the end for most surnames ending in "v" and "n"; the surnames with a "-y/-i" ending can be changed to the female form by replacing the ending with "-aya". But there are other names that came into Russian from other languages and would change differently. For example, my family name is German by its origin so it doesn't have a feminine form at all %)

Wow! Thanks for typing all that down and explaining that so thoroughly. And as you mentioned in a previous post, Hollywood doesn't always address the masculine/feminine ending of Russian surnames as English does not have this naming convention and it would probably confuse the average non-Russian speaking audience. I would not have known if you didn't point it out. I'm very happy to learn a little bit more about Russian culture. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Much, much appreciated!
