1920s Heavy

Time to run cowards!!

Obviously the minigun Heavy carries did not exist that early in the 20th century. So I combined the Russian PM M1910 (Pulemyot Maxima) heavy machine gun with the minigun that the Heavy carries. Hope that worked…

Once again, I want to thank my audiences on DA, Tumblr, and elsewhere on the web for all your kind support. Only two more classes to go!

I would think the heavy wouldn't have the Red star because i believe it is explained that his father was a pro capitalist counter revolutionary.

Actually, it's more likely that Heavy's father was one of the "Old Bolsheviks" that Stalin wanted to get rid of, thus labeling him as a "counterrevolutionary", and sending his family to the gulag. Reasonably, they quickly grew disillusioned about communism, or, at least, the "communism" of Stalin's Soviet Union, but, if the Iron Curtain serves as any indication, Heavy is still proud of where he came from - just not fond of it's leaders.

I would still more or less believe his father was a loyalist to the Russian empire because there are not many Russian video game characters who are like that.

However, that wouldn't explain the many items related to the Heavy that rely upon Soviet phrases, the primary item being the Iron Curtain. Even the description of the damn thing states that Heavy built it in honor of the Republic, not the Empire - and Russia didn't became a (Soviet) republic until the Bolsheviks took over. It wasn't declared to be a republic during the time of the Provisional government, between the February and October revolutions. Then again, it could be that Heavy didn't share his fathers loyalty to the tsar.

where it is explained?

Well, the comics explain half of it, where a director trying to make a movie about the mercs asks Heavy about his past, and mentions that heavy's father was a counter-revolutionary, and he and his family had been sent to the gulags, and a later comic reveals that they had, indeed, escaped from a gulag. However, first and foremost, just because his father was a counter-revolutionary, that wouldn't necessarily make Heavy one too. And second, we must consider the game as the primary cannon, not the comics, as they came afterwards. And certain items, voice commands, etc., show that the Heavy is, indeed, proud to be a (former) patriot of the Soviet Union, with the most obvious element being the Iron Curtain minigun - just read it's description.
Now, it's clear that Heavy became disillusioned with the system later on - otherwise, he wouldn't have become a mercenary. But anyone with a bit of knowledge in history would know how these seemingly contradicting factors would ad up, considering the time period the series is set in: from the mid-to-late '50s to the early '70s and '80s.
Now, heavy's father couldn't have been a counter-revolutionary during the Russian Civil War, because his family, and indeed, Heavy himself, wouldn't have been sent to the gulag - they would've been just flat-out killed. Also, Heavy distancing himself from the system enough to use items that are obviously inspired by '50s and '60s American pop culture points towards a certain flexibility or disillusionment, while other items point towards loyalty to the current state of his country.
And this is where our knowledge in history should come in handy:
The cause of Heavy distancing himself from his home, despite being loyal to it and his family, his flexibility towards the country which is in bitter rivalry with his own motherland, and the claims about his father leave us with answer that can be summed up by a single name:
Stalin.

The most reasonable answer to these discrepancies in data lead us to the Great Purges, which saw many "enemies of the state", including old bolsheviks, now claimed to be "counter-revolutionaries", going through showtrials, and being executed or sent to the gulags. His father, possibly a man who fought in the Civil War, may have been the victim of one of these trials. Note that he was claimed to be a "counter-revolutionary", and not a traitor - this means that the accusation originates from before the second world war.

With logical deduction, it's easy to figure out what could've really happened.
